Claims from various OPC suppliers such as 440 mg OPC complex suggest that 440 mg OPC is obtainable, but this may represent the entire content of the capsule. In general only a small amount of OPC is contained. Thus the bioavailability of the product should be checked here. Labels such as OPC grape seed extract (oligomeric procyanidins) 300 mg, OPC (95 %) or 200 mg OPC Complex are misleading because usually only a small amount of OPC is actually contained. Often you hear about grape seed extract with 95 % OPC, which likewise does not mean OPC. What signifies an OPC complex? Is it a pure substance or is it a complex? These terms can be misleading.

Almost all suppliers of OPC are located abroad, even though they have a German website. Unfortunately, these providers are rarely or not at all monitored by German authorities because they are unreachable.

The OPC content can be measured by various methods. In our years of experience, we have observed that the safest method is the HPLC-method. In particular we use the RP-HPLC method (PV.03.P194_02) Test specification for OPC analysis (click here to view), wwhich is the most commonly used method of analysis of quality botanicals.

Dr. Michalzik’s OPC is produced under the supervision of medical professionals in Germany. Only materials of the highest quality are used.

Dr. Michalzik’s OPC contains no fillers fillers (resulting in slightly higher production costs) and only natural substances are used, resulting in an exceptionally high concentration of OPC (oligomeric procyanidins). Polyphenols (270 mg of total polyphenols per capsule) are not just OPC! In addition to the OPC other important polyphenols (antioxidant active substances) are included, such as monomeric procyanidins.

OPC by Dr. Michalzik is subject to strict examinations of German supervisory authorities. It is manufactured by use of gentle production technologies without heat or additives in the capsule filling and without the use of processing agents which are not required to be mentioned on the packaging.

No industrially produced silicic acid (silicon dioxide) flow aid.
Biotikon does not use silicon dioxide or silicic acid (SiO₂, known as E551) as a flow aid. The foundation for product testing "Stiftung Warentest" states that those may contain nanoparticles. Silicic acid or silicon dioxide in dietary supplements has been discouraged. Bio Suisse has terminated approval of silica or silicon dioxide. Silica from horsetail is not to be confused with this industrially produced silica.

No Aluminum Contained
A large number of nutritional supplement providers use aluminum as a sealant for cans. During the sealing process an aluminum foil is strongly heated by a high frequency electromagnetic field. We deliberately do not use this method!

Without talcum!
The release agent and lubricant talcum which is used for manufacturing of tablets or capsules can contain asbestos fibers. Biotikon completely dispenses with the use of release agents and lubricants in their capsule production.

OPC originates from grape seeds. Much knowledge about the product is received from red wine.

Polyphenols of plants are known as phytochemicals.

When OPCs are separated in the body, they no longer form the original blocks (catechins) but substances with a new identity possessing a larger spectrum. Therefore they are called pro cyanidins since they do not disintegrate into catechins but cyanidins. Green tea, for example, contains mainly monomeric (single) catechins, which are not comparable to OPC. A peeled banana turns brown, iron will rust. The reason is the oxidation of these substances by radical oxygen molecules (free radicals).
